Frozen Tombstones

Create spooky, flash-frozen ice sculptures right before your eyes with this icy, frozen tombstones Halloween experiment!

Materials Needed

  • plastic bottle of purified drinking water
  • dark food coloring
  • large mixing bowl
  • ice cubes
  • rock salt
  • digital thermometer
  • timer
  • Plate or tray (pre-chilled in the freezer)

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Add a few drops of dark food coloring to a bottle of drinking water and recap it.

Step 2: Place the bottle upright in a large bowl surrounded by ice and a generous amount of rock salt.

Step 3: Set a timer for 45 minutes and leave the setup undisturbed.

Step 4: Check the ice bath temperature with a thermometer to ensure it drops below 15°F.

Step 5: Place a plate covered with water into the freezer so it becomes icy cold.

Step 6: Carefully remove the chilled bottle from the ice bath without shaking or jarring it.

Step 7: Retrieve the frozen plate and slowly pour the supercooled liquid onto the center of the plate.

Step 8: Watch as the liquid instantly turns to ice upon touching the plate, building up into a creepy frozen tombstone tower.

This icy, instant-freezing magic happens thanks to a cool science secret called supercooling! When you mix rock salt into ice, it forces the ice to melt and makes the water surrounding your bottle extra chilly—way colder than standard freezing temperatures (32°F or 0°C). Normal tap water usually turns into ice as soon as it gets that cold because tiny bits of dust and microscopic specks inside give ice crystals a place to start forming. But because purified water is super clean with no specks inside, the liquid gets trapped in a "supercooled" state—meaning it stays liquid even though it's colder than ice! The second that icy-cold water splashes onto your frozen plate, the impact gives the liquid its very first starter point (called a nucleation site). This triggers a rapid chain reaction, causing the water molecules to suddenly snap together and instantly freeze into solid ice right before your eyes!
